You’ve worked hard all year and now summer vacation is nearly here. But if you get stranded on the side of the road miles from your destination, then your vacation might get ruined.

As you prepare to get away this summer, follow these helpful tips that can help make your vacation as relaxing and enjoyable as possible.

Getting a complete vehicle inspection. To keep your vehicle running, your vehicle manufacturer recommends inspections and services at regularly scheduled intervals. A complete vehicle inspection, including the air-conditioning system, may help drivers avoid costly repairs as well as keep cool on hot summer days. To ensure the engine’s exhaust and cooling system and battery is in good working order, hire a technician to help you.

Every month and before long trips, check the tire pressure. Properly inflate all four tires, plus the spare, to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended levels. Under normal conditions, tires can lose up to 1 pound per square inch. To check the tire air pressure monthly, use an accurate tire gauge and always when the car is cool which means the car has not moved in at least 3 hours and has been driven less than 1 mile.

Checking the tire tread. At least 1/16 of tread depth is what tires should have. To perform the “penny test,” insert a penny in the tread at several points on the tire, with President Lincoln’s head pointed down. If the top of Lincoln’s head can be seen at any of the points, then your tire needs replacing because it’s worn out. Tires on passenger vehicles is what this test is appropriate for.

Check fluids. Checking the gas is something you shouldn’t forget as well.

Why shouldn’t you overload the vehicle? Creating excessive heat inside your tires and robbing you of fuel economy is overloading. With overloading, excessive or irregular wear or early removal of tires will be caused if tires are not inflated properly or not in good condition.

You need to pack an emergency kit. These kits will prepare drivers in case there’s an unexpected breakdown. Jumper cables, flashlight, batteries, protective gloves, a reflector, basic toolkit, flares and matches, a gallon of water, 12-volt portable air compressor, blanket, and nonperishable food are suggested items for a vehicle emergency kit. If you have an auto club membership, this could also be helpful. Also, make sure your cell phone is charged.
